After I graduated from high school, I worked for about a year at Bausch & Lomb and the Old Boston Store. Then I got the bright idea of joining the Air Force in 1962 and spent the next 4 years serving our country. I spent time in Columbia, Mississippi and at a missile site in Little Rock, Arkansas where I held a Top Secret clearance. From there I was sent back to Mississippi to Keesler Field. I reached the rank of Airman 2nd Class but before I could reach 1st Class I suffered a mental breakdown. I’ve spent the last 30 years battling this disease.
Over the next 30 years, I wandered from one mental site to another from Syracuse, to Utica State Hospital and then to a nursing home in Waterville. Finally, over the last 5 years I have been able to recover much of my mental capacity and life has been much better.
I have fond memories of UCA and remember Sister Gertrude and Sister Agatha well. They were tough but very fair. I wasn’t that good of a student in my sophomore year but I went out for the baseball team and made it. If it weren’t for baseball I would have quit high school right then. I remember singing in the A Cappella Choir and belonging to the Legion of Mary.
I now live at the Willow Park Assisted Living Facility in North Utica where I enjoy the food, which is good, especially the coffee and breakfasts. To pass the time, I enjoy reading and watching sports on TV, especially baseball and football. I am a New York Yankee and New England Patriot fan.
Thanks for inviting me to the 50th Reunion. I enjoyed seeing so many of my former classmates. It brought back many fond memories.
